PR: What’s Math Got To Do With It?
Shanley, our creative director, is working on a brand audit for BIG YAM (yes, we take our own medicine). As part of the audit, he asked me how I came to work in PR. The long and the short of it is that I flunked an organic chemistry test. More specifically, I bombed the math portion of the test.
They frown on math illiterate people in the pre-med program. So I hightailed it over to the glamorous world of communications, where there was only one math requirement, and I earned a PR degree from Central Missouri State University. GO MULES!
Fast forward 20 years. I’m officially an idiot for thinking this career path would be devoid of long division and data analysis. Our craft requires a TON of math and finance skills, including client budgets, an agency P&L for your department, negotiating great rates with vendors – I’m looking at you, Cision – and tracking target hours, billable utilization and profitability reports. Should I continue?
So, the next time you think, “I have a degree in communications, so I really don’t need math,” think again. As the recruiting and hiring manager for my squad, I’m looking for Jedi Master level Excel junkies, reporting enthusiasts and anyone who can “math that” to help show the value of our craft and the very measurable impact we have on our clients’ business objectives.
